40 Things that Won’t Get You into Heaven

A partial list, in no particular order:

1. material wealth
2. a good reputation
3. having many readers and supporters
4. having many Facebook Likes and Twitter followers
5. fame
6. honesty, as in: “I honestly think the Church is wrong about….”
7. success
8. having the coolest new mobile phone
9. adopting whatever ideas the secular culture teaches
10. science
11. intelligence
12. skillfulness at anything
13. cleverness
14. good looks
15. strength
16. warm emotions about God and religion (true devotion is not mere emotion)
17. being a member of “the correct” Catholic subculture (liberal, conservative, traditional, etc.)
18. adhering to very strict ideas about liturgical form
19. following all the rules of the Catholic Church (rules, not teachings)
20. praise from priests, religious, and Bishops
21. condemning to Hell everyone who does not believe as you do (do not condemn, and you will not be condemned)
22. judging the teachings of the Popes, Councils, and body of Bishops as if you were above them in the Church (do not judge, and you will not be judged)
23. scholarship
24. being “nice” to everyone (unless it’s an expression of love of neighbor)
25. successfully harming everyone who harms you
26. having lots of control over your own life (or the lives of others)
27. pleasures of any kind
28. entertainments of any kind
29. great skill at the latest Xbox game or the like
30. wearing Google Glass
31. having an expensive car
32. having an expensive house
33. going “Green” (with environmentally-friendly everything)
34. political correctness
35. lawyers, guns, and money
36. anonymous internet postings of your opinions
37. telling just the right lie in just the right way
38. rationalizations for your sins
39. following the majority opinion of Catholics or of a particular Catholic subculture
40. going to Mass regularly, without going to Confession regularly

    Canon Law states that Catholics shall confess their sins at least once a year. Also if a Catholic has committed a grave sin they shall not receive Holy Communion until after Confession. Your #40 implies that if you regularly go to Mass and not regularly to Confession you will not get you to Heaven. You can not assume that every Catholic regularly commits mortal sins. I think a better #40 would be if you regularly go to Mass, regularly fall into serious sin, and not regularly go to Confession, you will not get to Heaven.

      All I’m saying is that avoiding confession will not get you into Heaven. It’s a somewhat humorous list, so you can’t really draw too many conclusions from what it says.
