Pope Francis is not attacking the Latin Mass

How can I say that, when the holy Father has stated his intention to bring an end to the Traditional Latin Mass? The problem is not the Latin Mass, but the people who use it as a way to gather in what has become essentially a separate Church from the Catholic Church. Their claim that this is about the TLM is false. It is about the people who have separated themselves from the Popes, Councils, Apostolic College, and the Magisterium.

Pope Francis does not object to the TLM. He objects to the weeds that have grown up around that ancient holy memorial. And the gardeners of the memorial are cultivating the weeds, and pulling up the flowers. The leaders of the TLM communities have usurped the Magisterium. They reject Vatican II, in one way or another. They reject the authority of every Pope and Council, except for what they judge to be correct. They treat the current Vicar of Christ with gravely immoral malice, hatred, ridicule, and denigration.

Fr. Z compared Traditionis Custodes (TC) to a terrible U.S. Supreme Court decision codifying racism and segregation, and Summorum Pontificum was compared to the Emancipation Proclamation.

Bishop Rob Mutsaerts, a Dutch auxiliary Bishop, called TC “an Evil Ukaze”, the term ukaze refers, in Imperial Russia, to a proclamation of the tsar, government, or a religious leader that had the force of law. The meaning here is an evil edict by a dictator. He also called TC “a declaration of war.”

a Rorate Caeli article by a priest described the situation as “attacks on the solemnity and integrity of the beloved Roman Rite, as Our Lord prophesied and wept over the downfall of Jerusalem.” The “downfall of Jerusalem” was the destruction of the city by a Roman siege during a Jewish uprising against Roman occupation

A LifeSiteNews article called the “abolition” of 2007’s Summorum Pontificum by Pope Francis “deliberately cruel and violent”.

A OnePeterFive article called TC an Iron Fist in the name of unity. Another article at 1P5 compared TC to the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

These reactions to TC prove that Pope Francis is right, the community that has seized the Latin Mass as their own exclusive possession is in need of a very sharp correction. Their open malice toward the use of his God-given authority by the Pope shows they are schismatics. And their rejection of the very authority of Popes and Councils is not only schismatic, but results in heresies. They want the Popes and Councils to leave them alone, to believe whatever they like and to do whatever they choose. How is that Catholic?

  1. Matt Z. says:

You are right. Pope Francis is not calling the TLM evil! If Im not mistaken he is allowing the Bishops to restrict it where they see fit which as Pope he has the power to do. The internet can be used for the good. But if we are not careful it can become an idol.

  2. Alex says:

I believe pope Francis is NOT attacking the Latin mass per say.
I will try to see the things from traditionalist point of view. Indeed I have contacts with them, and let me say many of them sincerely accept pope Francis as valid pope and pray for him, although they do not agree with everything he says. He is a human too.

For them the Latin mass is everything holy in their lives. So much so that they believe the evils of the current age can be fixed through TLM sacrifice, while at the same time many accept the validity of the Novus Ordo mass. If such people are taken as example of traditionalist communities, they would have no problem to get the permission of the local bishop, something I sincerely hope for them. They have to get rid of any rhetoric of certain people among their own communities who allow themselves to speak in public against the Holy mass of St Paul VI or Vatican II. As clearly set by pope Francis. And frankly, they should not speak against ANY rite of Holy Mass and ANY Ecumenical Council, even if the pope didn’t set such requirements for TLM to continue!

Let revert for them some 20 years back. What did we have back then? No Latin mass, only the Novus Ordo mass of St Paul VI. We didn’t even know how exactly the Latin mass looked like, for those of us who are younger. The new mass was everything we had, the Holiest of holies, the Sacraments we were Baptized in, Confirmed, received for the first time Jesus in the Holy Communion, many got their Marriages blessed and some were ordained. All in the rite of sacraments approved by St Paul VI after Vatican II. They were and are absolutely valid!

Could anyone dare to say those sacraments were not valid for so many decades? Because that would mean that Your Own Confirmation, Holy Communions, Marriage,… were invalid before 2007 Summorum Pontificum, dear traditional faithful! That definitely was NOT the purpose of pope Benedict’s Summorum Pontificum in first place!

Pope Benedict made a big return by allowing TLM and sacraments administered in the Traditional Latin rite. That was a great gift for the traditionalists, many of whom had never had before that experience! But that was NOT to be used against the Holy mass of Paul VI as clearly stated in Summorum Pontificum itself.

In all those years since his resignation when certain people tried to include pope emeritus Benedict in their schemes, pope Benedict REFUSED TO BE DRAGGED in opposition against pope Francis!

The greatest mystics like St Margaret Mary, St Theresa of Avila, St Faustina, listened to and followed meticulously every order of their superiors. If Peter is wrong in something, then God will be his judge, as St Catherine of Siena explained in great detail using even hyperbole: “…we ought not to raise up our heads against him, but calmly lie down to rest on his bosom. He who rebels against our Father is condemned to death, for that which we do to him we do to Christ: we honor Christ if we honor the Pope; we dishonor Christ if we dishonor the Pope…”

Let our traditional brothers and sisters remember everyday that on the Judgment day Jesus will judge everyone according to the love: ” I was hungry and you gave me to eat”. Jesus didn’t set particular sets of rules how to serve the Holy mass other than what He did Himself at the Last Supper, that is in the core of every valid rite on earth (and we know there are many more rites than just the Latin). As long as you do that you will live…as Jesus told that to the young man who asked him how to inherit eternal life: “You know the commandments…”

Be in peace! The Latin masses continue for now as long as allowed by their bishops. It is all in your hands dear traditionalist brethren. Show the humility you preach so much to the others.

  3. Fr. Michael A. Boccaccio says:

The use of the word “traditional” by those who prefer the Tridentine Liturgy [TL] is incorrect. If truly traditional, then it would prefer the Liturgy be celebrated in Greek or Aramaic! Also, how can one claim to be a “traditionalist,” if one disclaims Vatican II; is not in allegiance with Pope Francis, etc.?
The term “sedevacantist” might apply more. Also, those so aligned with the TL, apparently, have a very poor sense of history. The TL is a mere 500 years old, preceded by many other official Liturgical reforms, e.g. Gallican Rite in the first millennium. Lastly, it seems to me the TL community has a very poor sense of the Roman Catholic Church, which incorporates over 20 Eastern Catholic Churches sui juris. In other words, the Roman Catholic Church is not just Latin. Thank you.
