Christopher West’s pornification of the Gospel

The reader is cautioned that this post contains mature language and subject matter.

Here is the post from West dated 14 March 2018. Please read it there. My commentary follows.

When West says the goal of nature is life, he means reproduction. He interprets the grain of wheat parable, which is about Jesus dying for our salvation so as to establish the Church, as if it were sexual. When West says “life-giving love”, he means sex which is capable of reproduction.

But it gets worse. Then he says that we give our lives, imitating Jesus in being willing to die, by having marital sex. He actually uses the word “orgasm” in a commentary on the parable of Jesus dying for our salvation. He compares the salvific death of Jesus, which should be interpreted as our calling to die to self, as if it were a calling to sexual pleasure. And he is not speaking of marriage as a whole, or the selfless love of spouses for one another, or even the natural marital act as a whole. He speaks only of venereal pleasure itself, claiming that this is like the salvific death of Christ.

Then he speaks a pornographic blasphemy, that we should offer our “little deaths”, meaning orgasms, in union with Christ’s salvific death on the Cross. He uses a certain term for Christ’s death: “big death”, to suggest, very overtly, a comparison between orgasm (“the little death”) and the salvific death of Christ.

Let me just say this next point very clearly. Christopher West is preaching a pornographic version of religion which is less like Catholic Christianity than any Protestant denomination. West has sexualized Christianity to such a severe extent that he is openly preaching a new religion, which is essentially a pornographic interpretation of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. This radical reinterpretation of the Christian Faith sees everything through the lens of sexual pleasure. He continually speaks as if the highest good in human life were venereal pleasure, not the love of God above all else, and the love of neighbor as self.

Essentially, West is reviving some of the earliest and most severe heresies found in Christianity. These wicked heretical groups idolized sexuality, and had little relationship to Christianity, other than borrowing some symbols and language. West has made an amalgam of Christianity and sexual idolatry, and the former is a slave to the latter. He sees sexual pleasure as worship of God. And he sees God’s work of creation and God’s work of salvation as a sexual act by God and by Christ.

He has taken the point of view of Sigmund Freud, that everything in culture has sexual desire as its source, and applied that thinking to Christianity. He considers that everything significant in Christianity is to be understood by an analogy with sexual acts and sexual pleasure. Christopher West is worshiping sex, very blatantly, and he is worshipping the human body.

And now consider that West has approved of almost every type of unnatural sexual act between spouses, other than male completion outside the natural act. He refuses to admit that these acts are marital sodomy and are intrinsically evil and gravely immoral. He has praised and approved of Gregory Popcak’s book, “Holy Sex…”, which is blatantly pornographic. (The book includes short fictional stories about the sex lives of various couples, with explicit details.) Thus, the sexual pleasure of which he speaks, especially for the wife, does not necessarily occur in the natural marital act. And this is what he compares to God creating the universe, and to Christ dying for our salvation: specifically, the venereal pleasure within sexual acts, including shameful and perverse unnatural acts.

The title of West’s post is “All of Creation Tells of God’s Spousal Love”. But the post does not speak of love, nor even of marital sex, but only specifically of sexual pleasure. To compare the death of Jesus Christ for our salvation to venereal pleasure — between married persons but sometimes obtained by sodomitic acts on the wife — is direct blasphemy against our Lord, and it is pornographic and sacrilegious. His words are objectively an exceedingly wicked sin.

I am quite certain that a future Pope will condemn all of Christopher West’s books and his entire version of theology of the body as heresy, apostasy, and a type of sexual idolatry. And after that, an Ecumenical Council will do the same. For the Church cannot long remain silent in the face of this grave attack on God himself, on faith, morals, and salvation, and on marital chastity. Christopher West is a modern-day Nicolaitan, using the name of a holy person, in this case Pope Saint John Paul II, in order to promote a religion of unrestrained sexual worship.

Christopher West was baptized, so he is in that sense a Christian. But the religion that Christopher West preaches is not Christianity. It is a pagan religion of sexual idolatry and idolatry of the body, disguised as the teachings of a Pope-Saint, disguised as Catholic Christianity. I don’t consider Christopher West to be a fellow Catholic or a fellow Christian. He is a heretic and an apostate, who is guilty of public blasphemy and sexual idolatry, and he is leading many souls away from Christ and toward Hell.

What do you think it would be like, to live in a time when a major Christian heresy were prevalent, such as Arianism or Monothelitism or the like? Do you think that all Church leaders immediately recognize the heresy? But over 300 Bishops fell into Arianism. And the monothelites, who thought Jesus had only one will, were not corrected immediately by Pope Honorius I (that was his error; not acting). We are living today in a time when severe heresies are very popular, and have enthusiastic approval from Catholic Christian leaders, who are thought by many to be orthodox and faithful (but Christ knows they are not).

So it is irrelevant that West’s books have the imprimatur, and his work is used in many dioceses (usually in a form that avoids most of his worst errors). It doesn’t matter if he has been praised by certain Bishops, priests, and theologians. His teachings are clearly contrary to the most basic teachings of Christianity, so much so that his work is not an heretical version of Christianity, but a renewed version of paganism. And he is using the name of a Pope-Saint to spread these errors.

UPDATE (3-22-18) In a new talk, West compares the sacrifice of Christ on the Cross to the sexual act of consummation in a marriage:
Here is another example of the primary error of the distorted version of theology of the body — not the version taught by Pope Saint John Paul II. West’s version is a pornification of the true theology of the body. It is blatant sexual idolatry.

Your post goes well with the first part of today’s readings at mass EX 32 7-14, this is the first part:

    The LORD said to Moses,
“Go down at once to your people
whom you brought out of the land of Egypt,
    for they have become depraved.
They have soon turned aside from the way I pointed out to them,
making for themselves a molten calf and worshiping it,
sacrificing to it and crying out,
‘This is your God, O Israel,
who brought you out of the land of Egypt!’
    The LORD said to Moses,
“I see how stiff-necked this people is.
    Let me alone, then,
that my wrath may blaze up against them to consume them.
Then I will make of you a great nation.”

West idolizes sex by promoting many unnatural sex acts. We like Moses should pray that God be easy on us and relent after so many have followed West and his idol worship of sex and the body.

Is Christopher West even that significant? I read a lot online about my Catholicism, and I never heard of him until today. Isn’t it more likely that, in 2118, he will be a forgotten footnote at most?

I believe West is a student of JPIIs sick “theology of the body” This all flows from the redefinition of marriage as ordered not to babies and education, but to the ‘good of the spouses.” West is just trying to make it really really good for the spouses haha!

    • Ron Conte says:

There is nothing wrong with Pope John Paul II’s version of theology of the body. West has put the holy Pope’s name on West’s own errors.
