How could Christ suffer the Passion and Crucifixion if He had the Beatific Vision at the same time?

Jesus had the Beatific Vision of the Divine Nature in His human nature, from the first moment of the creation of His human nature. This must be true because His Divine Nature and human nature are united in one Person. So how could He suffer the Passion and Crucifixion, while beholding the Divine Nature?

One idea is that He suffered in his body, but that His soul did not suffer. But this position is contradicted by the words of our Lord: “My soul is sorrowful, even unto death.” (Mt 26:38). Therefore, His soul suffered intensely, as did His body. And the intensity of the suffering contradicts the alternate position that He suffered in soul while simultaneously beholding the Divine Nature. For if He still had the Beatific Vision, then He would not need an Angel to strengthen Him: “Then an Angel appeared to him from heaven, strengthening him. And being in agony, he prayed more intensely….” (Lk 22:43). Someone with the Beatific Vision does not need an Angel to appear to him from Heaven, because he would have the direct vision of the Divine Nature, which is what makes Heaven heavenly.

Yet it is not possible to hold that Jesus never had the Beatific Vision, or that He only obtained it once He entered Heaven with His human nature.

My theological opinion is that, although Jesus had the Beatific Vision throughout His human life, at the Passion, his human nature was temporarily prevented from beholding the Divine Nature. This veiling of the human soul of Christ, so that He could not see the Divine Nature, was for the purpose of allowing Him to suffer for our salvation. The veiling of the soul of Christ ended at His death, perhaps just before His death, or just afterward.

If Christ had the Beatific Vision during His suffering on the Cross, then He could not have said: “My God, My God, why have you forsaken me?” (Mark 15:34).

But additionally, we must hold that this veiling did no harm to the union of the body and soul of Christ with His Divine Nature, and that this veiling occurred in accord with the human will and the Divine will of Christ.

  1. Jonathan's avatar Jonathan says:

Very interesting and insightful article. What about the following verse in Luke: {22:17} And having taken the chalice, he gave thanks, and he said: “Take this and share it among yourselves. {22:18} For I say to you, that I will not drink from the fruit of the vine, until the kingdom of God arrives.”

The last verse leads me to believe that Christ’s Beatific Vision was veiled here as well. What do you think ?

It’s hard to say when this veiling began. By saying when the kingdom of God arrives, I don’t think He meant, when the Beatific Vision returns. I would think the veiling began here:
{26:37} And taking with him Peter and the two sons of Zebedee, he began to be sorrowful and saddened.
{26:38} Then he said to them: “My soul is sorrowful, even unto death. Stay here and keep vigil with me.”
